Biography
Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Shamal al-Mashghari al-Amili, known as Shams al-Din, was a jurist, poet, and literary scholar of the ninth Islamic century. He carried the designation of Machghara and belonged to a scholarly chain that preceded the later prominence of the Al-Hurr family in the town.
Biographical works record that Shaykh Ibrahim ibn Ali al-Kafami studied with him in the ninth Islamic century and that his name appeared in al-Kafami’s handwriting on works of jurisprudence. He was also linked to the scholarly family network later associated with al-Hurr al-Amili.
The available sources preserve few details about his writings or his dates of birth and death. His teaching and connection to al-Kafami nevertheless provide early evidence of Machghara’s importance as a center of religious and literary learning.
