Shaykh Hassan ibn Ali al-Hurr al-Amili al-Mashghari
Jurist, literary scholar, and specialist in inheritance law and ArabicA scholar of Machghara’s Al-Hurr family and father of the compiler of Wasa’il al-Shia, known for jurisprudence, literature, Arabic studies, and inheritance law.
Biography
Shaykh Hassan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad al-Hurr al-Amili al-Mashghari was born around 1000 AH into a scholarly family established in Machghara, many of whose members became known for jurisprudence, hadith, and literature.
His son Muhammad ibn al-Hassan al-Hurr al-Amili described him as an accomplished, trustworthy, and learned jurist with expertise in Arabic, law, and literature. He was especially consulted on inheritance law and taught his son a number of works in Arabic and jurisprudence.
He died in 1062 AH while travelling to Khurasan and was buried in Mashhad. His life reflects the role of Machghara’s scholarly school in the formation of the author of Wasa’il al-Shia and other scholars.
