Archbishop Nicolas Hajj
Melkite Greek Catholic archbishopA church leader born in Machghara who served the Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarchate, became an archbishop, and participated as a Council Father in the fourth session of the Second Vatican Council.
Biography
Nicolas Hajj was born in Machghara on 30 June 1907. He joined the Basilian Salvatorian Order and was ordained a priest on 1 April 1934.
In 1965 he was appointed an auxiliary bishop of the Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarchate of Antioch and titular archbishop of Damietta. That year he also participated as a Council Father in the fourth session of the Second Vatican Council.
He was appointed Archbishop of Baniyas in 1984 and became Archbishop Emeritus after resigning for reasons of age in 1985. He remained emeritus until his death in 1995.
