Biography
Ali ibn Mahmoud ibn Shams al-Din al-Amili al-Mashghari was a jurist and scholar from Machghara and a relative and teacher of al-Hurr al-Amili, the author of Amal al-Amil and Wasa’il al-Shia. He studied jurisprudence, hadith, and Arabic with scholars in Jabal Amil and Najaf.
Al-Hurr al-Amili described him as a learned, accomplished, and upright jurist. Al-Hurr studied works of Arabic and jurisprudence with him and received a general authorization from him. His learning also extended to logic, prosody, and hadith methodology.
He authored or was credited with treatises on a legal property question, shortened prayer, hadith transmission, prosody, and logic. He helped teach al-Hurr al-Amili and transmit Machghara’s scholarly tradition to a later generation.
