The Ibrahim Abdel Aal plant, also known as the Markaba or Abdel Aal plant, is one of three hydropower stations operated by the Litani River Authority. It is located at Markaba near Machghara in West Bekaa and forms the first stage of the Lake Qaraoun hydropower scheme.
The original Litani hydropower plants entered service between 1962 and 1968. Their combined installed capacity is 192 MW, while actual output at each station varies with water availability, equipment condition, and operating schedules.
Development and Recent Milestones

Because of the age of the equipment, the Authority identifies comprehensive rehabilitation and modernization of the three plants as necessary for sustainable production and spare-parts availability, including control, protection, and electromechanical systems.

On 24 March 2026, Authority teams restarted the Abdel Aal plant after repairing an emergency fault. The Authority continues publishing monthly and annual generation indicators for the station.

Abdel Aal is connected to a wider network of tunnels, pressure pipes, and waterworks carrying water through the system toward Anane, Awali, and Joun, with periodic inspection and maintenance of these assets.
